quality you can taste

Only the finest ingredients
At Miyoko's Creamery, we’re all about using the best of the plant world to create our crave-worthy cheeses and butters. We dig deep into nature’s pantry—nuts, seeds, grains, and more—to find the most nutrient-packed ingredients that’ll make your taste buds dance.
We don’t mess around with the usual junk like palm oil or xanthan gum—if it’s not top-notch, it doesn’t make the cut. Every ingredient is carefully chosen for quality, ethics, and organic goodness, so you can feel good about enjoying a product made with quality foods—not the oils, starches, gums, and fake flavors you’ll find in most other vegan cheeses and butters.

Let’s Make the Unfamiliar,
Familiar!
It’s time to get these ingredients more familiar to our Miyoko’s community. Every day, we get asked about these unique ingredients, and we're here to help you get to know them better. Though they may seem unfamiliar, they’re easy to understand and have a clear purpose on why they are used.

TAPIOCA STARCH
Tapioca starch is a gluten-free flour that comes from the cassava plant. It can use it to thicken soups, stews, and gravies, or can be used instead of wheat flour for gluten-free baking.

AGAR
Agar is a natural thickening agent made from red seaweed, a plant-based alternative to gelatin. It helps give our products that firm texture you love!

ANNATO
Annatto extract is a natural dye derived from the seeds of the achiote tree (Bixa orellana). This is what we use to color many of our products and is widely used to add color to various foods.

KONJAC
Konjac is a starchy root derived from the konjac plant, native to Asia. It's often used as a thickening agent and is rich in fiber. We use it in our liquid mozzarella to give it that perfect stretchy texture you expect when it melts and cooks.

MUSHROOM EXTRACT
Mushroom extract is a natural fiber from White Button Mushrooms that improves freshness, shelf life, and sustainability, reducing food waste. We added it to ensure longer-lasting freshness. It's completely safe to consume, as it's a pure fiber extract that doesn't contain any of the allergens found in actual mushrooms. Plus, it’s colorless, odorless, and tasteless!

TURMERIC
Turmeric is used in some of our products to add a vibrant, natural color. We choose turmeric because it’s a natural alternative to artificial dyes, giving our products a beautiful, warm tone while maintaining the integrity of our ingredients.

Natural Flavors
Purely Transparent

Dear Miyoko's: What's in your 'Natural Flavors'?
This is one of the most common questions we get—and we totally get it. 'Natural flavors' might sound a little mysterious, but we’re all about transparency. Let’s quickly clear up what they are, why we use them, and what it means for you.
-
What is a natural flavor
Essentially, a natural flavor is a substance drawn directionally from the matter of a living thing (in our case, plants) with the purpose of adding flavors, not nutrition.
-
Are natural flavors vegan
We adhere to strict standards to guarantee that our products and ingredients are completely vegan. While the precise formula is proprietary, the natural flavors we use are 100% vegan, Vegan Association Approved, and GMO free. This unique blend is also gluten-free and free from MSG.
-
What is our natural flavor?
Our natural flavors are made from a blend of berries, oregano, and flaxseed.
-
Why don't you tell us specifically what these natural flavors are?
Natural flavors are like secret recipes—proprietary blends that give each product its unique charm. The FDA permits the use of the term ‘natural flavors’ in the ingredient list, provided that the blend is deemed safe.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is European style butter?
European-style butter refers to a cultured butter that has been churned for a longer period. European-style butters are favored for their rich taste— due to their fat content and cultured process. They typically contain less water, have a creamier texture and, great meltability. They are often the preferred butter for baking— especially when the flavor of butter is just as important as its function.
-
What's the difference between Miyoko's butter and margarine?
Margarine is a blend of vegetable oils, like palm oil and canola oil. Butter is made from milk, in our case cultured cashew milk. Because of this difference in ingredients, you will notice a big contrast in how they both taste and perform. Margarine will tend to have a slight chemical aftertaste, because of added flavorings. Miyoko's will leave you with a wonderful creaminess and subtle cultured tang. Performance wise, margarine isn't an ideal 1:1 swap for your recipes, as it tends to leave your baked goods overly soft and oily. Miyoko's is a chef-crafted, true 1:1 swap, and even browns beautifully thanks to the milk solids it contains.
-
What is cultured butter and why is it better?
Cultured butter is butter that during the craft process, has had cultures added to the milk. This creates fermentation, and allows the cream to deepen in flavor and thicken in texture. The result is a wonderfully flavorful butter with a signature subtle tang and noticeably less acidity. You can use cultured butter in any dish that calls for butter—no need for any alterations to your recipe.
-
When do you use salted butter vs. unsalted butter?
Unsalted butter allows you to control the exact amount of salt in your recipe and final dish. Because salt helps bring out the flavor in foods, it’s a welcome addition in almost any dish. You can use salted and unsalted butter interchangeably. If a recipe calls for unsalted butter and also lists salt, just use slightly less salt than the recipe calls for.
